Big Lou’s Butcher Shop now open on Powell

Big Lou’s Butcher Shop is now open on the corner of Powell St. and Gore St. in the Downtown Eastside, just one block east of Gastown. The shop is housed in a beautifully-restored heritage building which used to be part of Vancouver’s Japantown.

This classic butcher shop offers organic meats from around B.C. and Alberta, including pork from Sloping Hills Farm near Qualicum Beach, B.C., poultry and lamb from Polderside Farms and beef from Pemberton. The shop also makes several sandwiches including Roast Beef and Porchetta (which may give Meat & Bread a run for their money). Check out their menu here.

The bacon-wrapped sirloin I picked up this afternoon was tender and flavourful. At $3.50, it was a steal. And the service was knowledgable and friendly. Sunrise Market is conveniently located kitty-corner if you want to pick up some vegetables to go along with these fantastic meats, which are organic, sustainable and ethically raised.

Big Lou’s Butcher Shop is located at 269 Powell and is open seven days a week, 10am – 6pm.

The owners of the very-popular Main Street hotspots, Habit and Cascade Room, are the first to lease a retail space in the new V6A condo development.

The “Union Street Grill” will open soon on the northwest corner of the building on Union St., near Main St.

Just around the corner on Main and Georgia, the London Pub is now open.

London Pub opening soon at 700 Main

London Pub 700 Main St. Vancouver

The former Pacific Hotel and Pub at the corner of E. Georgia and Main in Chinatown has been transformed into the London Pub, opening later this month.

The pub and building at 700 Main St. been beautifully restored, and features large brick arches, big windows out onto the street, and high ceilings. The outside of the building has been stripped down to its original unpainted brick facade and looks amazing.

No word yet on the food and or beers on tap, or who is behind the operation, but we know it’s NOT a Donnelly Group pub, which is a welcome relief. I think this will be a great watering hole for residents in Chinatown/Gastown and Strathcona.
