First restaurant announced for Olympic Village: Village Kitchen

The Village Kitchen will open at the Olympic Village in 2012.

The Village Kitchen will open at the Olympic Village in 2012.

The Olympic Village (aka: The Village at False Creek) will get its first restaurant in late 2012 when Daniel Frankel, the owner of Mill Marine Bistro, Burrard Bridge Bar and Grill, Prospect Point Cafe and Stanley Park Pavilion, opens “Village Kitchen.”

Frankel won the tender to operate a 100-seat, 2 level restaurant next to the Creekside Community Centre. The building is currently empty, but the interior will be constructed to LEED standards, with water conservation systems, biodegradable packaging and a special fan that eliminates 99.9% of food grease.

The menu will be comfort food: burgers, pizza, briskets and southern style meals. The restaurant will feature art and sculptures from prominent Canadian artists like Douglas Coupland, among others.

In addition to the 100-seat dining room, there will be 200 outdoor seats, divided between upper and lower patios with spectacular views of the city skyline and False Creek.

Just around the corner, Vancouver-based Terra Breads will open a small cafe at the Olympic Village in July.

Activists and anti-poverty advocates took over the Olympic Village (aka The Village at False Creek) plaza in the Saturday afternoon snow, demanding that the city live up to its commitments of affordable housing at the Village. Here’s a look at what happened:

The new sales campaign for the The Village at False Creek starts next month, with Bob Rennie promising to sell 60 units in 60 days.

Previews are now on, with sales officially starting March 5, although many of the units have already been spoken for according to Rennie.

As we previously reported here,  suites in two of the interior buildings are back on the market at around 30% off the original prices, with up to 50% off the most expensive units.

What do you think? Will these new discounts help move the units?

By the way, I’m not clear on what “plus” means: den or flex (which could be a windowless room?)

Also, I still think it’s overpriced, especially for the smaller studio units. For example, comparable studios under construction across the street at Wall Centre False Creek were priced at $260,000 – $290,000 only a couple of months ago.

It’s also Leed Silver – not as good as the Olympic Village’s rating, but still impressive nonetheless.
