Review: The Edge Grille on Granville disappoints

The Edge Social Grille and Lounge

The Edge Social Grille and Lounge, Granville St., Vancouver

Last night, a group of friends and I, freezing and searching for something on Granville Street to eat, wandered into “The Edge Social Grille and Lounge” in the Chateau Granville.

Originally, we were planning on going to Wings but there was a huge wait for tables and front host wasn’t very friendly, so we left.

The restaurant was pretty dead, although it was a Wednesday night and pretty cold for Vancouver. Still I was surprised to see only one other couple in the restaurant. Since we were freezing and starving we thought ‘what the heck,’ and had a seat.

The space is nice enough, similar to Moxie’s or Earls, but with a little less personality, if that’s possible. We perused through the menu, which is pretty limited, as they have lots of variations of the same thing. For example, there were five different kinds of flatbreads, and five different kinds of… you get the idea.

Nothing really stood out to us, so we ordered chicken wings and cheese fondue. I should add the food is overpriced IMO… with the flatbreads at $17(!) and cheese fondue around the same price. This isn’t the Fairmont hotel bar; it’s in the basement of a Best Western!

The Salt and Pepper chicken wings were greasy and lackluster, they reminded me of the frozen ones you can buy at any grocery store, dunked in the fryer. There wasn’t a lot of salt or pepper on them, so I asked for dip.

The waitress was perplexed as to what to do. All she could offer up was standard mustard, ketchup or tzatziki sauce. No BBQ sauce, no garlic aioli, nothing. Even the Costco hot dog stand has more options that this.

The cheese fondue fared better, although it was small and not worth its $17 pricetag. It came with two bread braids for dipping.

For dessert, we had the baked chocolate dessert, which came out in a coffee cup! It was good but again, way too small for the price and certainly nothing to write home about.

I should add that our service was fine, but the boxing match playing on every TV complete with bloodied faces and eyes was a bit disconcerting while eating.

Overall, a forgettable, over-priced experience, which I’m sure is not the feeling they’re going for.
