Army & Navy Urban Market opens April 4

Iconic Downtown Eastside department store Army & Navy is opening a new concept store on West Hastings Street between Hamilton Street and Homer Street.

Details are limited, but the “Urban Market” convenience store will open on April 4. The 2,000 square foot space will be stocked with market-type items.

Army & Navy President and CEO Jacqui Cohen is a big booster of the Downtown Eastside and it’s great to see the company trying something new in the neighbourhood. It will be interesting to see how the store does.

Lotus Sound Lounge, Lick and Honey shutting down

Lotus Sound Lounge closing

Lotus Sound Lounge closing

Popular nightspots Lotus, Lick and Honey, all located in the Lotus Hotel are no longer, after a Calgary group bought the entire building including the hotel portion.

There’s no word on who the company is, but we do know that they plan to open a sports bar and “top 40-style club,” presumably after renovations.

Lotus Sound Lounge will open for the final time this Saturday, March 26 for one final dance party. It’s a big blow for many fans, especially for patrons of Lick, which is the only female-driven queer bar in Vancouver.

Cafe Crema opening soon at Hastings and Cambie

Cafe Crema

Cafe Crema

Posh West Van café and bakery Café Crema is setting up shop on the edge of Gastown, near the Woodwards development.

The café will be moving into the retail space in the Flack Block, next to the extremely popular Meat & Bread and Freshbowl. It seems like the success of Meat & Bread has proven to others that the corner is a viable location for retail.

Only 3 years ago, it was the beginning of “the worst block in Vancouver,” 100 West Hastings. There was even a book written by Stan Douglas called “Every Building on 100 West Hastings.” Today, the stretch between Cambie and Abbott is completely different, with Woodwards on one side, and several restored heritage buildings on the other. Most of the renovated space is already spoken for.

Back to Café Crema, or crema: no word on an opening date yet, but they are known for authentic coffees, specialty drinks and baked goods. There is one location on Bellevue Avenue in West Vancouver. Visit their website.
