Vancouver Chinatown New Years Parade

Vancouver Chinatown New Years Parade

It’s the Year of the Rabbit, and Vancouver’s annual Chinese New Year parade takes over the streets of Chinatown this Sunday, February 6, 2011.

The parade begins at 12pm and is attended by more than 50,000 spectators. It features the largest assembly of traditional lion dance teams in the country. The route runs from the Chinatown gate, down Pender to Main, and ending at Keefer and Columbia. View the parade route map.

After the parade wraps up at 2pm, there are events for the whole family at the Chinese Cultural Centre and also at International Village (Tinseltown).

Prolific Gastown restaurateur Sean Heather, along with Scott Hawthorn (partner at Salt and Judas Goat) are joining forces to open “Bitter,” a 140-seat specialty beer pub in the historic Burns Block at 18 West Hastings.

The historic building, formerly a run-down SRO, is presently being converted into the city’s smallest apartments. At 270 square feet, the developer plans to rent micro lofts for around $750 per month. The residential portion of the project is scheduled to be completed March 2011. Source: Vancouver Sun

Bitter will occupy the ground floor of the building, which is directly across from Pigeon Park. There will be two entrances, a patio and a unique circular bar.

The location is definitely questionable, but Sean Heather has proven he’s got guts and the business savvy that almost guarantees any restaurant he opens will be successful, regardless of location. Heather also operates the “everything cafe” [Review] around the corner on Pender.

Caffe Brixton (Brixton Cafe) now open in Chinatown

Caffe Brixton Vancouver

Caffe Brixton Vancouver

A London-themed cafe in Chinatown, you say? Only in Vancouver would these two cultures come together.

Caffe Brixton (I keep calling it Brixton Cafe) is finally open on E. Georgia at Main, next to the London Pub which is also now open.

I haven’t checked out the cafe yet, but I did get the London Pub a couple weeks ago. It’s a beautiful space… it felt a bit empty though, I would have liked more of a cozy feel. Hopefully business picks up because it was pretty slow when I stopped by there on a Saturday afternoon. Beer was reasonably priced though… they didn’t have the kitchen up and running yet though.

A friend checked out Caffe Brixton today and here’s what he had to say:

“The kitchen is open but obviously a work in progress. They have a few pastries and 2 sandwiches in the display rack to choose from. I asked if they could make something else fresh or soup even and the response was no. I ordered a large latte for just under 5 bucks. It was luke warm, but it did have a nice leafy design on top. They told me that they do share the kitchen with the pub and that they’re working on a lunch and dinner menu. I think they opened too early. It’s dead quiet with a similar interior to the pub. They also have decades old issues of Architectural Digest and The New Yorker magazines to read. Maybe I’ll give them another go next month?”
